Ernie Davis Character Scholarship Award

The Ernie Davis Character and Empowerment (EDCE) Award is dedicated to inspiring youth to model the exceptional character and conduct of Ernie Davis. This award recognizes young individuals who empower their peers to be game changers for good in their schools and communities, through their exemplary behavior and strong moral character.

Ernie Davis stands as a beacon of hope for youth, showing that dreams can prevail and unity and harmony can be achieved, even in the face of adversity. His legacy teaches that hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to core values can lead to greatness. Ernie Davis was not only an exceptional athlete but also a loyal friend, a dedicated student, a strong community member, and a compassionate humanitarian.

The EDCE & Mentoring program was inspired by Bruce Jefferson’s 2016 "Spread the Word" Ernie Davis Scholarship project. Jefferson highlighted the profound message behind Davis's quote,

“Football is just a game. What matters is what you play for.”

The program encourages youth to embody and live by the values that Ernie Davis exemplified throughout his life, including respect, kindness, integrity, courage, hard work, humility, and peacefulness, values that defined Davis during his short but impactful 23 years of life.

The CDC-Kaiser Permanente adverse childhood experiences (ACE) study is one of the largest investigations of childhood abuse and neglect and household challenges and later-life health and well-being. The original ACE study was conducted at Kaiser Permanente from 1995 to 1997 with two waves of data collection. Over 17,000 Health Maintenance Organization members from Southern California receiving physical exams completed confidential surveys regarding their childhood experiences and current health status and behaviors.
